Damon Galgut wins Booker Prize for ‘The Promise’
The Writer from South Africa Damon Galgut has received the prestigious 2021 Booker Prize for Fiction on November 3, 2021. He has been awarded the prestigious 2021 Booker Prize for his novel `The Promise’.
- The Promise novel narrates one white family’s reckoning with South Africa’s racist history.
- Galgut was British bookmakers’ runaway favorite to receive the 50,000-pound ($69,000) prize with a troubled Afrikaner family and its broken promise to a Black employee — a tale.
- He won the prize 3rd time as a finalist and he was also shortlisted for “The Good Doctor” in 2003 and “In a Strange Room” in 2010.
- Along with it, Galgut has become the 3rd South African novelist after Nadine Gordimer (1974) and J.M. Coetzee (1983 and 1999).
