PM Modi unveils national emblem on new Parliament building

Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the 6.5 metre-tall National Emblem on top of the under-construction new Parliament building. The emblem made of bronze has a weight of 9,500 kg. It is supported by a steel structure of 6,500 kg

• The emblem was created by Sunil Deore from Aurangabad and Laxman Vyas from Jaipur.
• It took nine months to complete the bronze sculpture that measured 4.34 metres in width.

Internet exchanges launched in Durgapur and Bardhaman by National Internet Exchange of India

Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Government of India Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar has inaugurated two new Internet Exchange Points (IXP) of National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) in keeping with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Digital India vision to connect every Indian citizen at Durgapur and Vardhman.

• S. S. Ahluwalia, Member of Parliament for Bardhaman-Durgapur Lok Sabha was also present while the inauguration of Durgapur and Bardhaman.
• National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI)’s Two new internet exchanges will improve internet connectivity in West Bengal’s Durgapur and Bardhman.
• The new installed IXPs are part of an initiative under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) ‘Vision 1000 days’.
• The new NIXI internet exchanges in-state will help in contributing to the enhancement and improvement of Internet and Broadband services at the local level and in neighbouring regions.

Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy elected YSRC president for life

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Shri Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy has been elected as “president for lifetime” of Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress(YSRC) on Saturday. The decision of his appointment was made on the concluding day of the YSRC’s two-day plenary after an amendment to the party’s constitution.

• YS Vijayamma, mother of YS Jagan Mohan Reddy may step down from her role as honorary president of YSRCP to help her daughter YS Sharmila in Telangana and will be replaced by Jagan Mohan Reddy as lifetime president of YSRCP said by Party’s Parliamentary Party Leader Vijayasai Reddy.
• Jagan Mohan Reddy founded the YSRCP in March 2011 when their ties were severed.

Rajendra Prasad assumes the charge of Managing Director of National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited

Shri Rajendra Prasad assumed the charge of Managing Director or MD of National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited on 7th July 2022 and has replaced Satish Agnihotri who was dismissed by the government over corruption allegations. 

• Prasad is working as Director of Project with NHSRCL since November 2017.
• He is overall in charge of civil engineering works of the Mumbai Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Project, popularly known as the Bullet Train Project.
• He also led the civil works of the MAHSR section in the state of Gujarat i.e. 352 Km including the award of the biggest single Infrastructure contract in the country comprising of 237 Km long via duct and 4 stations as the Director Project.

Alvaro Lario named as new President of IFAD

The governing council of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has announced the appointment of Spain’s Alvaro Lario as the new President. Lario will assume charge as the new President of IFAD on 1 October 2022 and will serve a four-year term.

• Alvaro Lario will replace Gilbert Houngbo who has led the organisation since 2017.
• Lario will be the 7th president of IFAD and will lead the UN agency at a crucial time when global food prices are surging, induced by the Ukraine war, climate change, and the pandemic, with the World’s poorest countries hardest hit.

Sri Lanka PM Wickremesinghe resigns

Ranil Wickremesinghe resigned as Sri Lankan prime minister and has cleared the way to make an all-party government take over the country. 16 MPs of President Rajapaksa’s Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) party requested him to resign immediately in a letter.

• The country is facing the worst economic crisis since it gained independence in 1948 and citizens have been protesting against President Rajapaksa and his government, asking him to resign from the post.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc wins Austrian Grand Prix 2022

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc won the Austrian Grand Prix 2022 and held off world champion Max Verstappen. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Mercedes’ seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton came on the second and third place, after starting eighth, to complete the podium for the third race in a row.

• The Austrian Grand Prix 2022 was a Formula One (F1) motor race which was held on 10 July 2022 at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria. 
• It was the second Grand Prix weekend of the 2022 season to utilise the Formula One sprint format.

World Malala Day 2022

Every year, International Malala Day is celebrated on July 12 across the world to honour the young Pakistani human rights activist, Malala Yousafzai. this day is also known as World Malala Day.

• It also marks the birth anniversary of Yousafzai, the youngest Nobel Prize laureate.
• Yousafzai delivered a speech at the United Nations (UN) headquarters on the need for gender equality in education.
• 16-year-old Pakistani activist Malala Yousufzai delivered a moving speech at the headquarters of the United Nations and focused on the need for worldwide access to women’s education and appealed to the world leaders to bring changes to their policies.
• the UN promptly declared that the day will now be marked as ‘Malala Day’ to honour the young activist.
