3rd G20 Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group begins in Chennai

Under India’s Presidency, The 3rd G20 Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group began in Chennai. UN Secretary-General Ms. Mami Mizutori, Sherpa Amitabh Kant, and Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary P.K. Mishra addressed the inaugural session. The theme is “Capturing the Resilience Dividend Towards Closing the Infrastructure Gap” and “Enhancing Disaster Resilient Infrastructure Governance.”

Interest rate on deposits under EPF scheme hiked to 8.15% for FY 2022-23

Employees Provident Fund scheme

The government approved an interest rate of 8.15% on deposits under the Employees Provident Fund scheme for the financial year 2022-23. As per the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO), the Ministry of Labour and Employment said the approval of the Central government to credit interest at the rate of 8.15% per annum for the year 2022-23 to the account of each member of EPF scheme. In 2022, the interest rate for EPF accounts was 8.10%.

Israeli parliament passes bill to limit powers of judiciary amid mass protests

The Israeli parliament, Knesset, passed a bill that would overhaul the country’s judiciary and limit its powers. The bill was passed by 64-0, after the opposition boycotted it in protest. The new law will remove the power of the Supreme Court to overrule government actions it considers unreasonable.

J&K: Machail Mata Yatra in Kishtwar begins on July 25

 Machail Mata Yatra in Kishtwar district

In Jammu and Kashmir, the 43-day-long annual Machail Mata Yatra in Kishtwar district will be started on July 25th, 2023, and will conclude on the 5th of September 2023. The Yatra is considered the 2nd most famous pilgrimage in the Jammu division. The devotees visit the scenic Paddar valley and pay obeisance at the holy shrine of goddess Durga in Machail village after trekking a 30 km arduous route.

India & Argentina agree to a bilateral exchange of young researchers and Startups in the Biotechnology and Agriculture field

India and Argentina signed an MoU for the bilateral exchange of young researchers and Startups, particularly in the field of Biotechnology and Agriculture. The meeting was held in New Delhi led by the Governor of Santa Fe province of Argentina, Omar Angel Perotti. The Indian delegation showed their interest in collaborating in Geospatial technology, Quantum Computation, and Bio-Enzymes.

  • India is the 4th largest trading partner of Argentina, with bilateral trade touching a historic peak of 6.4 billion US dollars in 2022.

President Droupadi Murmu presented the National Geoscience Awards-2022 in New Delhi. The Award is instituted by the Ministry of Mines to honor individuals and teams for achievements and contributions in various fields of geosciences. 22 geoscientists, including 2 women, have been honored with the awards. Dr. Om Narain Bhargava received the National Geoscience Award for Lifetime Achievement for his pioneering work in the Himalayas spanning over the last four decades.

  • Dr. Amiya Kumar Samal got National Young Geoscientist Award for contribution to understanding the variation of sub-continental lithospheric mantle below different Archean cratons of the Indian shield and he is an Assistant Professor at Banaras Hindu University.

Social Media platform Twitter launched its new logo and has dropped the blue bird on its website for an X as part of a wider rebranding. Twitter’s new logo is a white X on a black background. Twitter owner Elon Musk and its Chief Executive Officer Linda Yaccarino launched the new logo for the social media network.

Indian women’s Softball team to take part for first time in Asian Games at Hangzhou in China in September

The Softball Association of India (SBAI) announced a 16-member Indian women’s team, and the team is going to compete at the Asian Games in Hangzhou to begin on 23rd September 2023. Softball Asia’s executive committee authorized it in February 2023. Softball was a medal sport at the Tokyo Olympics and will be included in the Los Angeles Games in 2028.

India won the 2 Test Match series 1-0. the 2nd test between India and West Indies finished in a draw in Port of Spain, Trinidad after the 5th day was washed off due to rain. India scored 438 in their first innings and bowled out West Indies for 255. Indian Team declared their second innings for 181 for 2.
