Govt gives nod to procure Pralay ballistic missiles for armed forces

The Defence Ministry gives the nod to procure 120 Pralay ballistic missiles for the armed forces that can be deployed along India’s border areas with Pakistan and China. In December 2021, The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted the maiden flight test of the indigenously developed surface-to-surface Pralay missile.

• Pralay can strike and destroy targets in the range of 150-500 km, and can also be used at the night to attack enemy targets.
• Pralay has a speed of around 2,000 km per hour.
• It is equipped with an infrared or thermal scanner.
• China has Dongfeng-12 missiles, and Pakistan possesses Ghaznavi, M-11, and Shaheen missiles.

West Bengal to get its first Vande Bharat Express on December 30

On 30th December 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off West Bengal’s first Vande Bharat Express on the busy Howrah-New Jalpaiguri route. It will be the first Vande Bharat Express to operate in West Bengal as well as in the Eastern parts of the country.

• A total of six Vande Bharat Express trains have been started so far between Delhi-Varanasi, Gandhinagar-Mumbai Central, Bilaspur-Nagpur, New Delhi-Andaura, Delhi-Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, and Chennai-Mysuru.
• The Vande Bharat Express train will leave the Howrah station at 6 am and will reach the New Jalpaiguri station at 1.30 pm.
• Vande Bharat Express will leave the north Bengal station at 2.30 pm and reach Howrah at 10 pm

President Murmu to inaugurate MIDHANI’s wide plate mill in Hyderabad

President Droupadi Murmu will inaugurate a wide plate mill of state-owned special steel manufacturer MIDHANI in Hyderabad, which has been installed at its existing facility at an investment of around Rs 500 crore for the rolling of slabs of various alloys. The wide plate mill facility aims to fulfill the requirements of special steel plates for national strategic programs and also facilitate import substitutes.

• On 27th December 2022, the President of India, Droupadi Murmu will inaugurate the wide plate mill and eminent dignitaries and distinguished guests will be also present.

Maoist chief Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ becomes Nepal’s new PM

According to Article 76(2) of the Constitution, Prachanda has been appointed as the Prime Minister of Nepal and will assume the charge as PM for the third time. Outgoing Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ joined hands with rival K P Sharma Oli, chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML). Prachanda has the support of 170 parliamentarians – from six parties and four Independents – in the 275-member House.

• In the Nepal general elections 2022, The Nepali Congress got 89 seats, while CPN-UML and CPN-MC have 78 and 32 seats respectively.

Mikey Hothi becomes first Sikh city mayor in California

Mikey Hothi has been unanimously appointed as the mayor of Lodi city in northern California and becomes the first Sikh to hold the top position in the city’s history. The newly-elected councilwoman Lisa Craig nominated Hothi. He represents the council’s 5th district and has served as vice mayor this past year under mayor Chandler.

• Hothi is graduated from Tokay High School in 2008.

Women’s National Boxing Championships 2022: Nikhat Zareen, Lovlina Borgohain in finals

Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain and world champion Nikhat Zareen have reached the finals of the Women’s National Boxing Championships 2022 in Bhopal. Lovlina Borgohain defeated Jigyasa Rajput of Madhya Pradesh in the 75kg category. In the final match, she will face Arundhati Choudhary who is the 2021 World Youth Champion.

• In contrast, Telangana’s Nikhat Zareen defeated Shivinder Kaur of All India Police (AIP) in the 50kg semi-final and will take on Anamika for the gold medal.
• Lovlina Borgohain and Nikhat Zareen, world championships bronze medallists Manisha (57kg) from Haryana, Punjab’s Simranjit Kaur (60kg), and eight boxers from Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) will play in the finals. 

Archery Asia Cup stage three: India finish with 10 medals including five gold

India topped the medals tally with a total of 10 medals, consisting of five golds, three silvers, and two bronzes in the Asia Cup 2022 stage three which was held in Sharjah from December 20 to December 25th, 2022. The Indian men’s team consisting of Brians, Ojas, and Ganesh Rao won the gold medal.

Cricket Australia renames Test Player of the Year award in honour of Shane Warne

On December 26, 2022, Australia’s cricket board announced Australia’s men’s Test Player of the Year award has been renamed to honor legendary spinner, Shane Warne. Every year, The Shane Warne Men’s Test Player of the Year award will be presented at the Australian Cricket Awards.

• This Australian Cricket Awards will be announced on January 30th, 2023.

Shreyas Iyer becomes India’s all-format highest run-scorer in 2022, overtakes Suryakumar Yadav

Shreyas Iyer scored and becomes the highest run scorer in international cricket in 2022. He has scored 422 runs in Tests, 724 runs in ODIs and 463 runs in T20. Iyer is the 3rd-highest run-scorer in international cricket this year.

• Pakistani batter Babar Azam is the leading run-scorer of 2022 in international cricket and scored 2,423 runs at an average of 52.67, with seven centuries and 17 half-centuries in 43 matches and 50 innings this year.
• Bangladesh batter Litton Das is the second-highest run-scorer with a score of 1,921 runs at an average of 40.02, with 3 tons and 13 half-centuries.
• Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Mohammed Rizwan is the fourth-highest batter with 1,598 runs in 41 matches, and 47 innings.
• Star Aussie batter Steve Smith is the fifth-highest run scorer with 1,475 runs with 3 tons and 8 fifties.
