The PhD scholarships will be offered to excellent students beginning their PhD in September 2024 who have an appetite for the research world and creativity, who thrive on intellectual excitement, and who will positively impact and shape the future for all in our society. The Hardiman PhD Scholarship is offered for four years, covering a stipend of €18,500 p.a. plus a fee waiver.
- Students in any full-time structured PhD course at the University of Galway.
- Current PhD students will not be able to apply for the Hardiman PhD Scholarship.
- Applicants must nominate one PhD supervisor at the University of Galway.
- Fulfil academic and English language requirements.

Eligibility Criteria
- Successful applicants will be expected to have a first or upper second class honours primary degree or equivalent.
- Applications will not be accepted from persons currently registered as PhD students or who previously were awarded a PhD.

Application Process
- Applicants must nominate one supervisor. A supervisor form must be submitted by the proposed supervisor by 9 February 2024 (17:00 Irish Time).
The application form comprises of:

- Application form
- Two academic references.
Selection Process
Assessment Process will be based on the quality and excellence of the applicant.
Applications will not be assessed if they are incomplete i.e. an incomplete application form, a completed supervisor form and/or two academic reference forms are not received after the advertised closing date.
Assessors will evaluate all four elements of the application and allocate scores as follows:
- Personal Research Statement (max. 50 points)
- Academic Qualifications (max. 30 points)
- Referees’ reports (max. 10 points)
- Prior Research Experience (max. 10 points)
Shortlisting of applicants will be undertaken by the panel of assessors.
All shortlisted candidates will be interviewed.
