Grandma Day 2024: Date, History and Significance

In Poland, Grandma’s Day is celebrated every year on January 21. The day is widely celebrated across Poland. On this day, children and adults give their grandmothers cards, flowers, and small gifts. Schools and kindergartens can also conduct small events and celebrations on this day. As per the research, Polish grandparents spend on average more time, than any of their European counterparts, with their grandchildren.

Grandma Day 2024: History and Significance

Grandma’s and Grandpa’s Day are two different holidays. Grandma’s Day is observed on January 21 and Grandpa’s Day takes place on January 22.

In 1964, “Kobieta I Życie” magazine created Grandma’s Day and the day kicked off to grow in popularity the following year when the “Express Poznański” newspaper. The “Express Wieczorny” newspaper entered the festivities and Grandma’s Day became a popular holiday among the Polish.
