Multi-dimensional Poverty Index released by NITI Aayog: Kerala is least poor state

Niti Aayog has released the 1st ever Multi-dimensional Poverty Index (MPI). the index measures poverty at the national, State/UT, and district levels.

• As per the index, Bihar has been adjudged as the state with the highest level of multidimensional poverty with 51.91% of the population.
• Followed by, Jharkhand (42.16%), Uttar Pradesh (37.79%), Madhya Pradesh (36.65%) and Meghalaya (32.67%) were ranked at 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th place respectively.
• On the other hand, Kerala (0.71%), Goa (3.76%), Sikkim (3.82%), Tamil Nadu (4.89%) and Punjab (5.59 %) have been ranked as the top 5 lowest poverty states across India.
• Kottayam (Kerala) is the only district that registered zero poverty in India.

Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI)

• The report is based on the reference period of 2015-16 of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS).
• The MPI Index covers the level of poverty across three equally weighted dimensions including health, education, and standard of living.
• It has 12 indicators which are nutrition, child and adolescent mortality, antenatal care, years of schooling, school attendance, cooking fuel, sanitation, drinking water, electricity, housing, assets, and bank accounts.
