Peace Corps Day 2024: Date, History, Significance

Peace Corps Day is a holiday and is celebrated every year on March 1. The day marks the volunteers of the Peace Corps program. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy launched the program on March 1, aimed at assisting underdeveloped countries by using technology to deliver economic and social development while at the same time fostering world peace and mutual understanding between Americans and the populations served.

History

In 1961, President John F. Kennedy founded the Peace Corps as a U.S. agency of volunteers on March 1, 1961. the U.S. Congress gave approval for the Peace Corps Act. Kennedy’s brother-in-law, Sargent Shriver was the first director of the Peace Corps on 22 September 1961.

the first initiative was introduced by Senator Hubert H. Humphrey Jr by launching the first bill to create the Peace Corps in 1957 which was three years before Kennedy.
