Every year, Pledge of Allegiance Day is celebrated on December 27. The first iteration of a patriotic Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1885 by Civil War veteran Colonel George Balch. Francis Bellamy, an editor at the children’s magazine “The Youth’s Companion”, was told to author a patriotic verse to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus touching down on the continent where the official original version of the Pledge was written.
