The Texas History Essay Contest is sponsored by the Texas General Land Office’s Save Texas History Program. It is offered to up to 3 students graduating from high school. The award includes a cash prize of $4,000 while the first runner-up and second runner-up will be given $3,000 and $2,000 respectively.

Eligibility Criteria
Follow the requirements for applying for the Program:
Graduating Seniors in any High School can apply. History, Government, and English students can enter. The authors of the three best essays submitted can be the winners if the essays so warrant. They will be identified and the prizes presented by The Sons of the Republic of Texas at the annual San Jacinto Celebration in Houston. The prizes will be scholarships to the college of each winner’s choice or will be provided to the student directly.

Selection Process
Participants of the essay contest must be students of appropriate age for the 4th grade or 7th grade. The information will be used to write their essays must come from a reliable published source (magazine/book) that has a recognized author and publisher. Additionally, essays will be considered on the originality of the idea, cohesiveness of thought, and organization.
