What is India’s Deep Ocean Mission? – The Government of India launched the Deep Ocean Mission – DOM in order to explore the marine diversity in our country, which is still unexplored. This ambitious project is being managed by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES). The mission aims to conduct the exploration of the underwater world on similar lines as ISRO does for space.
Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved the proposal of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) on the “Deep Ocean Mission” at an estimated cost of Rs. 4077.0 crores for a period of 5 years to be implemented in a phase-wise manner.
The estimated cost for the first phase for the 3 years (2021-2024) is Rs.2823.4 crore. Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) will implement this multi-institutional ambitious mission.
Deep Ocean Mission:
- The Samudrayaan project is an important part of the deep-sea ocean mission supported by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) in 2021.
- It aims to send manned submersibles into the deep sea for ocean exploration and rare mineral mining.
