Who is Indian-Origin Sikh Man, Becomes UK City’s First Turban-Wearing Lord Mayor – A local British Sikh councillor based in Coventry created a history for the central England city by being its first turban-wearing Lord Mayor.
Jaswant Singh Birdi was born in Punjab, India and lived for some time as a child in Calcutta West Bengal. Later, he moved to Coventry 60 years ago and has served as a local councillor in the city for 16 years.
Birdi is actively involved in setting up religious, social, and community projects in Coventry. He will serve as Lord Mayor as an ambassador of the city, his chosen charities for support for the year include Muscular Dystrophy Charity, the Coventry Resource Centre for the Blind, and University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire Charity.
He served as Deputy Lord Mayor for the past 12 months and has succeeded Councillor Kevin Maton in the role of Lord Mayor and Councillor Mal Mutton has been named as the Deputy Lord Mayor.
